Organ at Rodez

This spectacular organ is located in a rather utilitarian cathedral in Rodez, France. The cathedral is part of a fortified castle complex built during the religious wars of the 13th century. The workmanship of the organ is magnificent, but the placement of the organ in front of stained glass windows detracts somewhat from the power of its design. The organ was constructed of steel pipes and carved wood, and is decorated with angels and celestial musicians. The technology is surprisingly advanced, using just gravitational forces and natural materials to produce its beautiful sounds.
